![]() NHS Boston co-hosted with the New England region of Hellenic American Woman's Council (HAWC) on the topic of Greek wines and spirits. The inaugural presenter and speaker was Effie Panagopoulos, who was the first Greek woman in history to self-start a liquor brand. With KLEOS Mastiha spirit, she has created Greece's first luxury spirit brand, with her eyes set on creating the "new" Metaxa, and having a bottle of KLEOS on every bar. Effie spoke about her upbringing, experience in the Greek spirits industry and the reason why she decided to try this venture on her own. ![]() NHS Chairman Drake G. Behrakis donated a museum travel kit from the Museum of Cycladic Art to Stratos Efthymiou, Greek Consulate General in Boston. The kit covers the subject of Cycladic culture and contains audiovisual and printed materials, as well as copies of representative works from the Museum of Cycladic Art collection. This includes marble vessels and figurines. It enables young children to get hands-on acquainted with the Cycladic civilization, as well as for archaeology college majors to expand their understanding and research efforts. ![]() The National Hellenic Museum (NHM) hosted its spectacular 2018 Gala on Saturday, May 12th in the magnificent Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile. This year’s Gala, themed “Connecting Generations,” celebrated bringing the whole family and community coming together, as well as the diverse stories of the Greek American experience that the NHM collects, preserves, and shares every day of the year. The money funded from the Gala will be utilized to preserving Hellenic legacy in America, primarily with their oral history collection. Over 500 Greek Americans gathered with their friends and family to celebrate their heritage and give to the Museum in the spirit of philanthropy. Emmy Award-winning entertainment reporter and critic Dean Richards served as Master of Ceremonies. NHM Board Chairman John P. Calamos, Sr. and NHM President Dr. Laura Calamos spoke about how the Museum inspires and educates many generations of Americans through the NHM’s exhibits, classes, and programs, as well as through their vast collection of oral history testimonies of the Greek American story. This year’s event also featured both silent and live auctions to benefit the NHM and its educational mission, raising over $800,000! After dinner, Chicago’s local favorite Chris Sarlas Orchestra featuring George Dimas and Voula Karahaliou and The Levendes featuring Nikos Kourtras were the entertainment for the evening and brought the crowd to their feet as the gala audience danced into the night. ![]() Seasoned journalist, NHS member and educator John Metaxas offered an informative presentation followed by a lively discussion May 9, 2018 at Ousia in New York City. Metaxas discussed the evolution of the news industry with major news outlets now part of large conglomerates, as well as how a concentration on profits has resulted in substantial changes in news dynamics. In addition to addressing today's news climate with “fake news” and how news reporters have even lower approval ratings than congress, he also shared a glimpse into his diverse career. |
