![]() WASHINGTON, DC; June 22, 2016 – The National Hellenic Society (NHS) is proud to announce its collaboration with National Geographic in sponsoring The Greeks: Agamemnon to Alexander the Great exhibition, as well as the production of the three-part miniseries based off of the exhibition, The Greeks, and the digital series, The Greek Guide to Greatness. The collaboration is unprecedented, co-branding NHS with the world renowned National Geographic. NHS strives to be a beacon for the promotion, understanding and appreciation of the Hellenic heritage in the United States, passing on the stewardship of Greek heritage and shared democratic values and ideals to the next generation. The exhibition opened June 1, 2016 in Washington, D.C. following a celebrated stand at Chicago's Field Museum in collaboration with the National Hellenic Museum, and sponsored at the Field Museum by NHS member, John Calamos. The Greeks includes more than 500 stunning artifacts from 22 national Greek museums covering a 5,000 year historical time-span! Many of these artifacts have never left Greece and are on U.S. soil for the first time. The exhibition will be at the National Geographic Museum until October 2016. ![]() The Greek Guide to Greatness is a digital series co-produced by the NHS and National Geographic Television. The digital production will feature a series of vignettes highlighting the contributions of the ancient Greek world to contemporary society— many of which we take for granted yet remain part of daily life. Fifty students will share a two-and-a-half week cultural and educational immersion experience at the American College of Greece in Athens. It is a cultural, educational, and inspirational odyssey, and participants are accompanied by 20 students from the American College of Greece. It is a trip that alumni have described as a life-changing experience. The group met on Thursday, June 9 for orientation in Washington, DC, and a reception was graciously hosted at AHEPA Headquarters with the Heritage Greece 2017 class, NHS members, and Greek American mentors in attendance. The students will leave the following day. Heritage Greece is about "connections"-- connecting the students to their respective Greek roots, heritage, identity, and to one another as they forge life-long relationships. This year marks the seventh year of NHS' empirical studies of the Heritage Greece Program, and we've compiled enough data to support a broader study of the positive impact the Program has on these students and their families. It is truly remarkable! This year's Heritage Greece trip includes taking a Greek language class at the American College of Greece, touring the Parthenon and Delphi, taking a weekend trip to Crete, and more! |
