![]() On October 28th 1940, Greek prime minister Ioannis Metaxas said: “OXI” (NO) to an ultimatum made by Italian Prime Minister Benito Mussolini, which then led to the Greco-Italian War. Oxi Day represents Greeks' resilience, passion, dedication, and will to live freely, to honor their ancestors' sacrifices and preserve their culture. On Oxi Day 2022, over 130 members of the Greek-American community gathered at Woodside Country Club, in Syosset, NY for a poker fundraiser, a rich dinner and drinks and a celebration of our Hellenic Heritage. The evening was hosted by the NHS New York Heritage Greece Initiative and the NHS NY Chapter Committee and Sponsors. ![]() This year, the NHS placed two interns from Greece, Andreas Gkioumes and Fotis Prokopos in a marketing internship with ECOS and Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks, President and CEO of Earth Friendly Products. They participated in a week long internship following the Heritage Weekend & Classic and gave a final presentation on ECOS Brand Positioning. Special thanks to ECOS, Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks, and the American College of Greece for helping us make this happen! ![]() And they’re off! Every year, the National Hellenic Society sponsors Greek American college students on a two-week educational and cultural immersion experience at the American College of Greece to discover their heritage and culture through the Heritage Greece Program. This year, we are proud to sponsor 65 participants, joined by 13 peer students from ACG. Meeting in Washington, DC before heading to Greece tonight, the group visited the Harvard Center for Hellenic Studies, where they heard from several classicist and fellows, and the Greek Embassy where His Excellency Ambassador Lalacos and his diplomatic corps welcomed the participants and provided an overview of Greece’s challenges. They then visited Capitol Hill, where they met with Congressman John Sarbanes, Senator Chris Van Hollen, and the staffs of Congressman Gus Bilirakis, Congressman Charlie Crist, and Congresswoman Dina Titus! This is just the beginning of a life-long commitment to these Greek American ambassadors of Hellenic heritage! Safe travels and καλό ταξίδι παιδιά! |
