November was a busy month for celebrity chef and author Diane Kochilas following the October launch of her PBS 13-part series, My Greek Table. The series is also co-sponsored by the National Hellenic Society.
Diane was the featured guest at four NHS chapter-hosted events along with NHS Executive Director Art Dimopoulos in Salt Lake City, UT, hosted by member John Saltas, in Seattle, WA, hosted by co-chair Elizabeth Grillos, in San Diego, CA, hosted by co-chair Gerry Ranglas, and concluded in Los Angeles, CA, hosted by member Thelma Nickols Waxman. Guests were treated to Diane's wealth of Greek cooking historical tips along with a Greek cheese tasting and wine from the Padis Vineyards in Seattle and Los Angeles.
Los Angeles' NHS guests engage in timely discussion regarding today's news environment
Seasoned journalist, NHS member and educator John Metaxas offered an informative presentation followed by a lively discussion March 23, 2017 at the Wilson & Harding Golf Course in Los Angeles' beautiful Griffith Park. In addition to addressing today's news climate, he also shared a glimpse into his diverse career. He challenged the guests to identify the first image in his presentation which set the stage. The photo depicted Senator Joseph McCarthy with his lawyer Ron Cohen who later was the lawyer and mentor of President Donald Trump. From there, he segued to one of his personal inspiration's, journalist Edward R. Murrow, whose See It Now show which criticized McCarthyism and led to the political downfall of the senator.
For the past 50 years, Dr. Camp has been involved at the Agora excavations under the Acropolis where he began as a Harvard volunteer in his teens. ASCSA is a consortium consisting of over 200 US colleges and universities that have been involved in the archeological and classical studies in Greece since the late 1800s.
The NHS sponsored one of the world’s leading classical archaeologists, Dr. John Camp, who was joined by George Orfanakos, Executive Director of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) in a series of presentations that included Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San Diego, California.
From Scouting Coordinator to General Manager, MLB Executive of the Year, and now ... Los Angeles Dodgers VP of Baseball Operations, Alex Anthopoulos is one of the youngest and talented executives in the game. "After building a Blue Jays team that made its first playoff appearance in 22 years and came within two wins of a World Series appearance, Anthopoulos surprised many fans and baseball observers last October by declining a contract offer to return." Toronto's loss became Los Angeles' gain. The NHS LA chapter hosted a luncheon on Wednesday, September 14 featuring Alex Anthopoulos, former GM of the Toronto Blue Jays and new Los Angeles Dodgers VP of Operations.
NHS Los Angeles and the Young Presidents’ Organization and World Presidents‘ Organization co-sponsored a lecture by renowned author Deepak Chopra on “The Health of Your Mind.” Luncheons are planned with NHS members who can share their business experiences. Discussions are also underway to sponsor the Trial of Socrates in Los Angeles.
