NHS Co-Sponsor of Three-Part PBS Series This is America Visits Greece featuring Dennis Wholey7/6/2017 ![]() This is America & the World is a series hosted by Dennis Wholey, a journalist and best-selling author with over 40 years of broadcast experience. The weekly series covers international affairs and is produced in Washington, D.C., featuring countries around the world. The series is broadcast nationally on public television and PBS stations, and it is distributed internationally by Voice of America Television. Dennis explores the cultural, social and political lives of people around the world. The 3-part series of This is America Visits Greece was shot in Greece and airs as follows: Part I on Sunday, July 9; Part II on Sunday, July 16; and Part Episode III on Sunday, July 23. Thanks to the George & Judy Marcus Family Foundation, the National Hellenic Society (NHS), American College of Greece (ACG), and the Heritage Greece Program will be highlighted in Part II on Sunday, July 16 at 10:00. The episode will feature interviews of several Heritage Greece Program participants and the American College of Greece President, David Horner. Part I Summary
Sunday, July 9, 2017 Dennis speaks with US Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt and visits the 2017 Concordia Summit with co-founders Nick Logothetis and Matthew Swift. The CEO of the Libra Group, George Logothetis, offers his passionate view of Greece's past, present, and future. Dennis also ventures to the island of Crete to speak with commanders from Greece and the United States stationed in the strategically placed Souda Bay Naval Base, while also stepping aboard a U.S. Navy vessel visiting Athens. Part II Summary Sunday, July 16, 2017 Dennis visits Athens to examine the state of the country today. Dennis speaks with Greece's Minister of Economy and Development, Dimitri B. Papadimitriou, and renowned businessman, A.C. Laskaridis, about Greece's economy and debt crisis. To learn about the refugee crisis in Greece, Dennis visits Sofia Kouvelaki of the HOME Project, which provides shelter for refugee children. He also talks with a 17-year-old girl about her harrowing journey from Afghanistan to Greece. Dennis visits the American College of Greece, which welcomes Greek American students to Athens with the assistance of the National Hellenic Society. Dennis experiences the historic and the modern with a visit to the cutting-edge Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center and the stunning ancient site of the Acropolis. Part III Summary Sunday, July 23, 2017 Dennis explores various cultural treasures throughout Greece by visiting the island of Mykonos to get a sense of Greece's most popular tourist island, while also traveling to the island of Delos to experience ancient Greek religious ruins. Dennis travels to the island of Crete to taste the origin of the Mediterranean diet and then visits Athens to take in the old world charm and beauty of the Grand Bretagne Hotel and the casual pace of life in the Plaka.
