The National Hellenic Society’s Heritage Greece Program, a fully-funded educational trip for first-time students to Greece, completed its first week. Already, the students have received breathtaking tours of Athens, the Peloponnese, and Olympia. Here is what they are saying about the Heritage Greece Program: ![]() “Tonight we finally got to meet our new Greek friends who are students at DEREE and who will be accompanying us with the rest of our journey through Greece. We all went to dinner together at a local Cretan taverna, where the food was great and the company was even better! We all got a chance to talk with our new Greek friends and learn more about their lifestyles as well as talk to them about ours. It was a great bonding experience and it amazes me how all of us have either known each other for just three days or three hours and we feel like we’ve known each other for years! Just when I thought this too good to be real trip couldn’t get much better, it’s getting better each day.” — Renee Paradowski ![]() “I couldn’t have drawn out a better situation than what I am a part of right now. The group dynamic is great; everyone is on the same page and shares the same goals in mind whilst here in Greece. The campus is the best kept secret from Greek-American students as well. The facilities are world-class, literally. The 2004 USA Olympic Teams trained there. On top of that, the most important part of the University, its faculty and students, are eager and willing to meet and greet complete strangers. It had an abnormally comfortable feeling as though I was an orphan meeting my parents for the first time. I guess the pride in character and compassion is one of many common Greek traditions I will be getting used to over the course of the next two weeks! I can get used to that.” — Alex Oberheide “Once we arrived in Greece, we were enroute to DEREE- the American College of Greece within a half hour. Our expectations were high due to the DEREE’s excellent reputation as a historical and leading university in Greece, and when we arrived, these expectations were surely exceeded. I, and many others immediately fell in love with the campus. The great mountains of Greece, and overall landscape amazed me. We received a few hours to rest, unpack, and adjust to the residence halls at the DEREE. The apartment which holds up to five people exceeded my standards, and I was extremely impressed, and grateful for the hospitality that the DEREE and National Hellenic Society are providing us.” — Theos Rizos
