Homer Oral History Project

An oral history is a powerful and permanent way to convey the Greek American experience through a tapestry of interviews conducted by and archived at the National Hellenic Museum. The Oral History Project is NHM’s effort to compile, catalogue and create online versions of digitized interviews of Greek Americans available for future generations to enjoy. Through its efforts and coordination, the NHS is helping to compile the Greek American story of NHS members, prominent Greek Americans and other connections with various organizations that can serve as “feeders” for interviews.
The Oral History Project captures the Greek American story as told by individuals through live interviews. The live interview is a powerful means to capture the Greek American story of a subject and an even more compelling source for future generations that can access the interview of a loved one. The NHM has unlimited capacity to create a vast archive of subjects that can be grouped by regions providing a comprehensive history and archive of the individual and community life of Greek Americans.
“The Greek American story warrants a permanent archive preserved for future generations to learn from and appreciate” said NHS Chairman George Marcus. “Our forebears overcame substantial challenges and laid the groundwork for Greek Americans to become an integral part of the American success story.”
A “Guide to Writing your Memoir or Conducting an Oral History Interview” is available to assist those who wish to participate in this project. Also, visit the National Hellenic Museum’s Frank S. Kamberos Oral History Center.
