As we commemorate Greek Independence Day, the National Hellenic Society (NHS) proudly honors the valor and sacrifices of the revolutionaries who fought tirelessly for the cherished ideals of freedom and liberty. Their resilience remains a beacon of hope in our modern world.

To mark this occasion, the NHS hosted an exclusive screening of Cliffs of Freedom on April 3, 2024, at the AMC Georgetown Theater. Co-sponsored by AHEPA, American Hellenic Initiative, Hellenic American Women's Council, The Hellenic Initiative, and the Washington OXI Day Foundation, this event brought together a community eager to delve into the rich tapestry of Greece's War for Independence.

Drawing inspiration from real historical events, Cliffs of Freedom vividly portrays Greece's early battles against the Ottoman Empire, offering a window into a pivotal chapter of Greek history. Cliffs of Freedom is an epic cinematic journey capturing the early struggles of Greece's quest for independence. Based on NHS member Marianne Metropoulos' novel, Daughters of Destiny, the film mesmerized the audience with its poignant narrative and powerful visuals. Marianne, alongside her husband Dean, served as producers of the film, infusing it with the spirit of past struggles and eventual triumphs. The film is available on several streaming platforms including Amazon, Apple, Google Play/YouTube, Vizio, Peacock, Roku, Tubi, and Xumo.

The screening of Cliffs of Freedom was followed by the traditional White House Greek Independence Day Celebration on April 4th. The President of the United States, President Joe Biden, greeted a host of Greek Americans along with His Eminence, Archbishop Elpidophoros. Following the White House event, the NHS and Washington OXI Day Foundation hosted a reception celebrating Greek Independence Day at Kellari Taverna in Washington, D.C. NHS is synonymous with parea, camaraderie and a shared appreciation of Hellenic heritage and legacy.

We are Greece's living spirit: Ζήτω η Ελλάς! Long live Greece!
